Merida´s Historic Center

This is defenetely one of the best areas to live or to visit in Yucatan. Everyone loves, history, culture and colonial architecture. In this article, I will talk about some of the best Barrios to live in Centro.

Merida´s historic center is divided by Barrios, each one has it´s own history and it´s own vibe. Some of the most desirable Barrios to live in, are Barrio de Santa Ana, Barrio de Santa Lucía, Barrio de Santiago, and Barrio de La Mejorada.

“Why are these 4 Barrios the most soght after by buyers? They are the best located in terms of historical value and all the services are within walking distance."

Something unique about each Barrio, is that each one has it´s own park and it´s own church. For example, Barrio de Santa Ana has Santa Ana park and the Santa Ana church. As I said, each Barrio has it´s particular elements that makes them different from the rest.

Depending on the Barrio, is the value of the property. Some are more expensive than others.

Barrio de Santa Ana is defenetely my favourite one. It is located parallel to the famous Paseo Montejo where you will find stunning historical buildings with french and eclectical architecture. It is a great pleasure to walk, run, go for a coffee or grab a beer in this historical avenue. In Paseo Montejo you will find great restaurants with local, mexican and international cuisines, museums, art galleries, hotels, coffee shops and bars with incredible interior designs. Most of the colonial houses in Santa Ana are restored, you can still find an opportunity but this is the most expensive Barrio of all due to it´s priviledge location of being beside Paseo Montejo.

Barrio de Santa Lucía is the second most sought after Barrio. It is next to Barrio de Santa Ana and it´s main attraction is Santa Lucía park, historically known for having the "serenatas yucatecas". This area has the most bohemian atmosphere of all. Santa Lucía park has the best gourmet restaurants in all the Historic Center. If you want to go for dinner with your partner, friends or family, this is the place. At night it´s just beautiful, you will see locals and international residents meeting for dinner or having a couple of glasses of wine, Tequila or Mezcal. It´s hard to find a property for sale in this area but I can assure you some of the most beautiful restored colonial houses are in this Barrio.

Barrio de Santiago- Without a doubt, one of my favourites. It is a very desirable area due to it´s proximity to the Cathedral, Santiago park, Santiago church and Santiago´s market where you will find fresh fuits and local food. There is also a supermarket and a cinema in the park. At night you can still see local people dancing the traditional Jarana. This Barrio is full of history, great spas, art galleries and great restaurants as well. There are great colonial houses restored and to be restored.

Barrio de La Mejorada- Also one of the most historic and conservative Barrios. Home of the first "Los Almendros" restaurant, known for it´s delicious yucatecan food nation wide. It is also close to the Cathedral, it has La Mejorada park, it´s church and there are gorgeous colonial houses as well. This Barrio is beautiful to walk at night.

Merida´s historic is defenetly a magical place to live or to visit. If it is your fist time, trust me, you will fall in love with the place and you will never want to leave.
